1962

  • Greenup Locks and Dam dedicated
  • Theodore Wilburn is the first black man to be appointed as Portsmouth police chief

1963

  • Citizens mourned the loss of President John F. Kennedy
  • U.S. Postal Service implemented the Zone Improvement Plan which required the use of five-digit zip code number
  • YMCA moved to the Gallia and Union Street location
  • Smith-Everett Hospital renamed Southern Hills Hospital
  • Desco Federal Credit Union opened for business

1964

  • NBC covers boat races at the River Days Festival
  • Ohio Stove Co. planned to double its plant size
  • Portsmouth's James Dickey Post 23 American Legion baseball team included three future professional baseball plays in Portsmouth's Al Oliver and Larry Hisle and Lucasville's Gene Tenace

1965

  • Construction began on the Citizens Savings & Loan Association Co.
  • Lucasville tornado causes $1/2 million in damages

1966

  • Riverside Park renamed in honor of Branch Rickey

1968

  • Wheelersburg hit by Tornado that killed seven people
  • Scioto Memorial Hospital completed and dedicated
  • Citizens joined to mourn the loss of civil rights' leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Larry Hisle broke into major leagues
  • Al Oliver joined the Pittsburgh Pirates

1969

  • Powhatan Arrow passenger train makes final run
  • Construction of Piketon A-Plant and Lucasville Prison
  • Government offices close in honor of Apollo moon landing
  • Lucasville prison begins construction

1970

  • National Guard kills four at Kent
