1921-1930

1922

  • Hopedale Home established on Milldale Road in New Boston

  • Ohio Division of Conservation and natural Resources purchased about 5,000 acres for the beginning of what is now known as Shawnee State Forest

  • Ohio National Guard purchase the Windel building located on Third Street between Washington and Court Streets

1923

  • Pastime Theater (South Webster) offers silent movies

  • Hurth Hotel, owned by Adolph Hurth, was built at Third and Chillicothe

1924

  • Mercy Hospital opened

1925

  • Hempstead Hospital opened

  • Masonic Temple destroyed by fire, damages estimated at $1 million.

1926

  • Semi-pro football clubs Portsmouth Presidents and the Portsmouth Merchants established

1927

  • Building of Scioto County Courthouse completed

  • U.S. Grant Bridge opened to foot traffic

  • J.C. Penney opened on Chillicothe Street

  • Semi-pro football club Portsmouth Shoe-Steels

1928

  • Portsmouth City Council passed legislation to place an $80,000 bond issue on the upcoming election to build a stadium on the banks of the Ohio River

  • City Charter passed for the City of Portsmouth

  • Jim Thorpe became the coach of the first professional football team (Portsmouth Shoe-Steels)

  • Portsmouth Spartans became an NFL club

1929

  • Spartans played their first National Football League losing to the Green Bay Packers 14-0

  • Union Street School was leveled by fire

  • Portsmouth reservoir is built

1930

  • Universal Stadium completed in time to host the first game of the Portsmouth Spartans as a member of the National Football League

  • Portsmouth Spartans defeated the Green Bay Packers 13-6

  • Four new high schools were constructed:  Scudder, Grant, Roosevelt, Harding (Sciotoville)

  • First wrestling match at Baesman's Arena
