1900-1910

1900

  • Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders came into town

  • Small pox, typhoid fever and diphtheria ran rampant in the early 1900's

1901

  • First medical patient in Scioto County is accepted

1902

  • Mitchellace opens as world's largest shoestring plant

  • Millbrook Park opens in New Boston

  • Park Hospital opened by S.S. Halderman and J.J. Rardin on Ninth St near Tracy Park

  • Portsmouth Library was built with funding from Andrew Carnegie

  • Ordinance was adopted to establish salaries for city officials

1904

  • Toy Pistol Factory exploded killing one person

1905

  • Carlyle Paving Brick Company was built in Sciotoville

1906

  • Selby Shoe Co. created

1907

  • Highland School bids accepted by the City Board of Education

  • Portsmouth streetcar workers strike

  • Captain T.A. McMahon of the Salvation Army raided saloons spreading the word of the evils of liquor  He was later dismissed from the Salvation Army.

1909

  • Levy passed to purchase and construct Portsmouth High School

  • Portsmouth Shoemakers played New York Giants
